Mission Statement

EP@W is an independent company set up to directly support people at work who want to co-operate in promoting work practices that improve environmental performance.

Our mission is:

To turn complex environmental and sustainable development issues into practical solutions.
To promote improved environmental practices by developing employee skills across all industry sectors.
We achieve our mission based on the following:

Underlying Principles, that inform all our programmes, are based on best practices in organisations with good environmental, health and safety, quality and sustainable development performance.

Electronic Delivery that uses fewer environmental resources, reaches regions other methods can’t, and involves people who may otherwise be excluded.

Education and Skills to help people develop their capacity to fulfill key new roles and responsibilities in building the transition to a more sustainable future.

Working in Partnership, a key element of sustainable development, enables people at work to link with external organisations and for us to work with others promoting improvements.

Campaigning for people to be recognised for their achievements with appropriate nationally recognised awards and qualifications.

Environmental Practice at Work Learning

EP@W materials talk about 'learning' rather than 'training' - we want to focus on the learner rather than the trainer.

Learning occurs in both educational and vocational settings. The educational world is about thinking, while the vocational world is about doing. Our learning materials explore the relations between these two worlds of education (thinking) and vocation (doing)

Active learning gets people to do things, instead of just receiving information. People at work are always doing something with the environment. They cut, clean, chop, chip, clarify, classify, and control lumps of the environment all the time. That is how the products we want get made. While they are doing things with environment, they can learn much more about that environment.

E-learning is about using information technologies like the internet to develop new ways of learning. We all learn in different ways and for different reasons. Sometimes we may not have access to standard classroom teaching provided by colleges or training centres. Perhaps our job or other commitments mean we have to learn at different times. And that is where the worldwide web is opening up all sorts of opportunities. Hence our concentration on web based learning materials. We hope our materials stimulate, entertain, encourage and educate.

Blending learning mixes face-to-face methods with e-learning techniques. All our learning materials require support from trainers, tutors and teachers. We always set out clear 'aims' of what we are trying to do in the long term. Then we spelliout what somebody completing the online programme could be expected to do at the end. This helps all supporters sing from the same song sheet.

Environmental Practice - Workplace Skills

Workplace skills are what you need to be able to carry out various work functions and activities.

Systems
What you need to do is determined by existing systems at work. In particular, new quality management systems spell out what managers can do. From these it is possible to work out what everybody could do to promote healthy, environmental and sustainable organisations. For more see Systems. And how the various Systems (eg ISO 14000 & SA 8000) fit with each other.

Standards
What people can do at work is determined by UK national standards of competence. These are called National Occupational Standards(NOSs) and are developed by Sector Skills Councils. There are NOSs for health and safety (Test your Health & Safety Awareness - Quiz) which point the way for NOSs for the Environment.

Strategy
The UK government makes both skills enhancement and sustainable development key priorities. There are signs that these two priorities are being joined up.

Framework
EP@W has mapped where there are existing NOSs and related awards and qualifications related to environmental improvement.
