Introduction To Corporate Responsibility (CR) In DNV
DNV ensures that CR is an integral part of its management system and business culture.
Managing the New Risk Reality means staying ahead in all facets of sustainable development: economically, environmentally and socially. This is referred to as the triple-bottom-line; it represents a balance which increasingly focuses on the need to align corporate goals with those of society.
DNV’s stakeholders and society at large expect corporate transparency, and that business decision-making is linked to ethical values.
CR in DNV is about enhancing the positive impacts our core business activities have on society. This must manifest itself in:
- How we conduct our business; and
- How the company is managed.
Important aspects in this regard are DNV’s business conduct in relation to for example ethics and corruption and how the company is managed with respect to diversity, communication, transparency, involvement in the local community and in global policy making.
DNV has a global CSR Board that is responsible for developing annual action plans and to continuously evaluate DNV’s CR commitment to ensure that we meet stakeholder expectations. The CR action plans are based on reviews of DNV’s CR performance as well as thorough examinations of why and how DNV should work with CR internally. The plans are living documents with the purpose of serving the changing needs and expectations of DNV’s stakeholders. The main focus areas of the Action plans are:
- Governance and business ethics
- Communication and transparency
- Safety, health and the environment
- Community involvement, partnerships and international collaboration.

Communication And Transparency
 | | Communication and transparency are both vital for the success of CSR, and measures are taken to improve DNV’s current stakeholder dialogues and communication, as well as to encourage greater transparency on CSR-related issues.
In the past decade, more and more companies have started to publish information on their social and environmental performance in addition to their financial results. Such triple-bottom-line reporting of economic, social and environmental indicators promotes transparency and DNV is broadening its reporting systems in line with the Global Reporting Initiative.
Ombudsman Ombudsman and an 'ethical helpline' was introduced in DNV in 2004. The main objective is to give all employees a trusted route to voice ethical concerns without any threat of reprisal.
CSR Training Employees must be provided with the information and tools they need in order to act responsibly and in accordance with DNV’s Code of Ethics. CSR is now an important part of DNV’s induction and management training programmes. |

Governance And Business Ethics
 | | DNV has designed a governance model which explicitly addresses business ethics. DNV also provides guidance to the employees in their daily operations on CR issues.
DNV’s Code of Ethics stresses the importance of never compromising on our integrity. Awareness raising on this is an important part of DNV’s training programs for employees.
Corrupt practices pose a serious risk to the sustainability of business and society. Corruption is incompatible with DNV’s values, and involvement in any form of corruption or bribery by anyone in DNV is unacceptable and prohibited. DNV has developed anti-corruption instructions in line with international recommendations and the guidelines of Transparency International.
DNV's reputation is at stake if we do not pay close attention to business ethics at all levels in the organisation. It is necessary to create a broad awareness on these issues, and make all employees aware of the legal and ethical boundaries and how to deal with different dilemmas. |
As corporate instructions cannot cover all workplace situations DNV has also made sure that various tools and mechanisms are in place to further guide employees.
DNV has appointed an Ombudsman so that employees have a trusted route to voice ethical concerns or get help when faced with difficult ethical choices. To support the anti-corruption instructions, guidelines with practical examples of what is considered acceptable or not when forming business relationships with clients and suppliers have been made. Implementation tools include training initiatives and workshop programmes on dealing with dilemmas.
Countries where human rights are violated
DNV is currently present in countries where human rights are violated and the personal safety and security of individuals are threatened. Realising that it is essential that DNV shows responsible involvement, special instructions have been made for establishing offices or business in these areas.

CSR Action Plan
 | | Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of ten corporate priority areas in DNV’s strategy plan.
The CSR action plan is based on a review of DNV’s current CSR performance as well as a thorough examination of why and how DNV should work with CSR internally. CSR in DNV is about enhancing the positive impacts our core business activities have on society. This must manifest itself in:
- How we conduct our business; and
- How the company is managed.
Important aspects in this regard are DNV’s business conduct in relation to for example ethics and corruption and how the company is managed with respect to diversity, communication, transparency, involvement in the local community and in global policy making. |
DNV’s CSR action plan 2003-2005 focuses on the following areas:
- Governance and business ethics
- Communication and transparency
