In urban areas the rainwater often is (was) fast drained away. That leads to a shift in the water balance, infiltration and evaporation declined compared with the natural conditions. Caused by the missing infiltration, the groundwater level decline, which could have irreversible consequences for ecosystems like wetlands, lakes or rivers (because of missing low flow runoff).
