The purpose of this article is to examine information regarding the antibacterial characteristics of silver when used in drinking water treatment, available data on bacterial populations in effluents from silver-impregnated filter units, regulatory and test programs relating to the bacteriostatic action of silver in filters, and recent health effects research.
