When to Hold and When to Fold - Considerations When Contemplating a Job Change

An environmental professional recently called me for career advice on making a job change. He has a secure job working for a federal agency, but was bored and wanted to work for an organization 'with a corporate culture that truly is in sync with sustainable development.' Should he make the move, and if so, which are the best companies?

I answered, 'No, wait until the economy improves, build both your résumé and contact network, and be very skeptical of what you read about so-called cutting-edge companies; do your due diligence.'

This column explores the rationale behind this advice and offers some suggestions to current and prospective environmental professionals, regardless of their job status.
