ACCIONA, leader in infrastructures, renewable energies, water and services
Created in 1997 following the merger of the Entrecanales, Távora y Cubiertas and MZOV companies, ACCIONA inherited from the original companies a philosophy based on the quality, profitability and technical excellence of its work. With a presence in more than 30 countries over five continents, it currently has more than 35,000 employees.
ACCIONA is an international company which develops and manages activities focused on contributing to social welfare and sustainable development, principally renewable energies, infrastructures, water and services. The companies belonging to the group share a philosophy for project management aimed at maximising profitability within sustainable development principles. This permits synergies between the different businesses which, together with a highly professional management, has enabled the achievement of excellent returns in strategic businesses.
ACCIONA also views innovation as a strategic line of business and has always been at the forefront of new markets and production techniques. It is a point of reference in the area of research in Spain and Europe, leading and participating in the principal initiatives of the continent and allocating more than 6% of profits and almost 4% of its EBITDA to R&D. Since 2006, the number of people at ACCIONA working on innovation has increased tenfold, and there are currently 290 employees at its three Technological Centres.
One of the principal landmarks in ACCIONA’s recent history was the strategic support for Endesa in 2007. This was the start of a new period where energy went from being an area of diversification for the company to form part of the principal core of its activities. In this way, the Company, with a model of sustainable development, was given an excellent opportunity to confront one of the major challenges of society: the large scale supply of energy and the development of a global energy model.
The challenge facing ACCIONA is to become a sustainable company of reference and leader in the transition towards a low carbon economy. The platform on which its business is focused, and where the current social and economic reality is understood, is summarised in our slogan, ‘Pioneers in development and sustainability’, which forms an integral part of all the activities.
For the second consecutive year, ACCIONA’s commitment to sustainability has been endorsed with the recognition received in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as leaders in the sector, an achievement which serves, rather than as an objective achieved, as an incentive to seek new challenges to enable us to continue being pioneers.
In addition, ACCIONA also forms part of other indices which assess sustainability in investment; these include the S&P Global Clean Energy Index, the Standard & Poor Global clean energy index and the KLD Global Climate 100 Index, the objective of which is to foster investment in the one hundred multinational companies which show themselves to be leaders in the battle against climate change through the use of renewable energies, clean technologies, efficiency and fuel for the future.
ACCIONA Agua concentrates on water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination, a technology in which it is the world leader.
ACCIONA Agua is a leader in the water treatment sector with the ability to design, construct and operate drinking water treatment plants, residual purification plants, tertiary treatment plants for re-use and reverse-osmosis desalination plants. ACCIONA Agua is committed to innovation and the application of the latest technologies, together with ensuring water quality in the different areas of activity.
The mission of ACCIONA AGUA is to be a leading provider of global solutions contributing to sustainable development in the water sector through innovations in the design, execution and operation of plants for the treatment, purification and desalination of water.
ACCIONA Agua’s strategy is based on maintaining a significant presence in the integral water cycle in those countries where it leads the sector including Spain, Italy and Portugal. In addition, the company places great priority on growth at an international level, acquiring a portfolio of desalination and waste water treatment plants of reference in strategic countries including the United States, the Middle East, Australia, Algeria, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Dominican Republic.
The importance of water for future generations.
Water is one of the natural resources most affected by the current rate of use and deterioration of resources. A shortage will soon become a global problem on a global scale, and Spain will be particularly affected.
Aware of this serious problem, ACCIONA Agua considers protection and rehabilitation of the environment intrinsic to its projects, as the environment can directly influence the cycle of water. Therefore, ACCIONA Agua develops solutions to the growing need to tackling the problem head on.
The different projects and contracts undertaken by the company contribute towards the treatment, purification, reuse, desalination and management of water for 50 million people around the world.
ACCIONA Agua always operates according to sustainable development criteria, from the perspective of responsible use, conservation and recycling of water to satisfy the current needs of our society, without compromising the needs of future generations. And it is aware that in order for society to make the necessary changes, we must promote education for sustainability.
Our Sustainability Report sets out our sustainable development measures.
Our desalination, sewage treatment and water purification plants protect your environment.
The main challenge for a company such as ACCIONA Agua is to satisfy the growing global needs for water and to do so in an environmentally acceptable way, using advanced technology and innovative management models.
Desalination is one of the vital services offered by ACCIONA Agua as a solution to the water shortage. A total of 53 Hm³ was desalinated in our facilities last year, an indication of the growing tendency of the activity.
One of the key points in the technological advancement of desalination is the reduction of energy consumption at the facilities. ACCIONA Agua believes that management is crucial for developing competitive solutions both in the design phase of the desalination plants, (which become commercial operations), as well as the company’s R&D. An important line of our R&D work focuses on the optimisation and improvement of efficiency in desalination, through the application of technologies and renewable energies in desalination and open sea desalination plants.
In the design of desalination plants – all of which use reverse osmosis technology – energy consumption is minimised, maximising recovery of the energy used through advanced Performance Recuperation Systems (hydraulic energy recuperators that offset consumption).
Reuse is another important line of work. Currently, more than 22 Hm³ of water subject to tertiary treatment is produced in purification plants that is later used for irrigation, and other applications. The new technological developments linked to the reuse of wastewater, such as Membrane Biological Reactors, allow for much more extensive use of the treated water.
The Safety Priority.
ACCIONA Agua aims for all its professionals to be and feel safe at work and to apply all the necessary preventive measures. It considers the management of occupational hazards to be one of the most important variables to consider in its management model and in the development of its business plans.
ACCIONA Agua aims to be a reference in the field of occupational health and safety. This objective requires compliance with the regulations in force, as well as the promotion of activities and actions that include all its workers. A campaign was conducted last year entitled ‘Fragile’, in order to raise awareness among company professionals.
