History Of Carus

History Of Carus

Carus was founded in 1915 by Dr. Edward Hegeler Carus, who first produced permanganate while at the University of Wisconsin. When World War I in Europe threatened supplies of potassium permanganate in the United States, Carus saw an opportunity. Today, Carus Corporation’s President and CEO, Inga Carus represents the third generation of the Carus family to manage the corporation.

During its more than 90-year history, Carus’ ongoing reliance on research and development, as well as its emphasis on technical support and customer service has enabled the company to become the world leader in permanganate, manganese, oxidation, catalyst and blended phosphate technologies.

Today Carus Corporation manufactures a range of products for the municipal and industrial markets with a majority used in environmental applications. Products include CAIROX® and AQUOX® potassium permanganates, RemOx® ISCO reagents, CARULITE® catalysts, AQUA MAG® blended phosphates, CARUSOL® liquid permanganate and LIQUOX® sodium permanganate.

Carus Corporation has expanded from its single location in LaSalle, Illinois, USA, to become a global corporation with locations in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Carus plans to further expand as we look for new opportunities to develop new and unique products for the environmental markets.

Responsible Care

Responsible Care

As part of our continuing tradition of more than 90 years of environmentally responsible activities, Carus Corporation is a committed participant in the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care® initiative. Responsible Care helps chemical companies go above and beyond government requirements. In the U.S., Responsible Care companies have reduced environmental releases by 78% and achieved an employee safety record that is more than five times safer than the average of the rest of the U.S. manufacturing sector. Responsible Care companies openly communicate their results to the public, making available the most performance information of any private sector industry group.

Responsible Care is more than a set of principles and declarations. It is implementing world-class management systems, verified through independent auditors; tracking performance through established environment, health, safety and security measures; and extending these best practices to business partners through the industry supply chain. Security has always been a top priority for the U.S. chemical industry, and ACC member companies have taken the lead in securing their facilities. Without waiting for government direction, ACC members adopted the Responsible Care Security Code, an aggressive plan to enhance security of our facilities, our communities, and our products.

Another key part of the Responsible Care management system (RCMS) process is mandatory certification by an independent, accredited auditor. Carus Corporation and other companies who have achieved this certification develop, document, and implement a policy that establishes a company’s framework of goals and objectives. Inherent in this framework is a commitment to continuous improvement that is measurable and documented. RCMS offers an integrated, structured approach to drive results in seven key areas:

  • community awareness and emergency response,
  • security,
  • distribution,
  • employee health and safety,
  • pollution prevention,
  • process safety, and
  • product stewardship.

This approach is taking America’s leading chemical companies above and beyond their prior accomplishments to achieve even higher standards of performance and greater value for their businesses. Certification must be renewed every three years.

In addition, Carus Corporation has written a Product Safety Bulletin to help educate customers, community members, and employees on general uses of permanganate products.

Emulsified Zero-Valent Iron (EZVI)

Emulsified Zero-Valent Iron (EZVI)

EZVI is a surfactant-stabilized, biodegradable emulsion that forms emulsion droplets consisting of an oil-liquid membrane surrounding zero-valent iron (ZVI) particles in water. EZVI capitalizes on the ability of food-grade surfactant, biodegradable vegetable oil, water, and zero-valent Iron to form hydrophobic emulsion droplets (micelles) that are miscible with DNAPL. Chlorinated volatile organic compounds in DNAPL diffuse through the oil membrane and ...

LIQUOX®

LIQUOX®

LIQUOX® sodium permanganate is an inorganic oxidant. The significant advantage to LIQUOX is its high solubility in water, allowing it to be a more convenient and concentrated form of sodium permanganate when used for organic oxidation of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
