Howden designs, engineers and supplies air and gas handling equipment, including industrial fans, process gas compressors and rotary heat exchangers. Our equipment may be found in virtually every industry but particularly in those such as in power generation, petrochemicals, mining, steelmaking and cement manufacture where the most arduous air and gas handling duties are to be found. At the core of the business lies Howden Technology, working at the forefront of engineering, and with unique expertise in aerodynamics, acoustics, stress and vibration analysis, and rotor dynamics.

History of Howden

We provide our customers with engineering expertise based on a long history of innovation in the air and gas handling field, and our past achievements still inform the way we work today.

Find out more about our 160 years of innovation in the table below, or by reading David Hume's book on the Howden Heritage at the bottom of the page.

In 1854, aged 22, James Howden set up his own consulting engineering business in Glasgow, Scotland, competing against professional engineers of greater age and experience. The focus was on machine tools and he was granted Letters Patent for improvements in the manufacture of rivets, bolts, spikes, screw blanks and other articles. The first Howden engineering works at 4 Scotland Street, Glasgow, was built in 1862 to construct engines and boilers for use in ships.

Howden - Adjustable Pitch Axial Fans

Howden AJN Mining Fans - A uniquely designed axial fan providing operating economy, low sound power levels and reliability.

Howden - Screw Compressors

Howden bare shaft rotary twin screw compressors are manufactured to exacting standards and are supplied globally to our partner packagers. This allies our engineering expertise with local knowledge, and enables us to provide strong support to our clients.

Engineering Solutions

Howden engineers are highly skilled assessing the overall performance of a fan installation in relation to its original duties and to any changes that have taken place in the demands placed upon it. We can provide fully costed proposals for matching the fan to current conditions while improving its reliability and efficiency and reducing operating costs by taking account of the most recent technological advances.

Waste Water Treatment

The modern waste water treatment industry requires the movement of large volumes of air at low pressure and Howden compressors provide a reliable source of air for its key process. The compressors can account for over 60% of the power used in a treatment plant, so Howden products are designed to deliver cost effective aeration solutions, optimising plant operations and lowering life cycle costs.
