In 1912, the Budd Company was formed by Edward Budd, who invented shot welding of stainless steel. Continental Diamond Fiber Corp. was formed in
1929. Budd Company acquired Continental Diamond in 1955. In 1963, Continental was renamed Polychem, Division of the Budd Company and was a leader in engineered plastic products.
The 1980's brought many milestones for Polychem. During 1981, Polychem developed the 'twist-snap' collector chain. In 1982, the 100% non-metallic system, stub shaft, and telescopic head-shaft were developed. The system was installed during 1983 in Miami-Dade, FL (see photo below). Polychem received a patent for non-metallic clarifiers in 1986. Polychem continued our mission into the next decade by developing a patent for grit bucket systems with stainless steel barrel wrap in 1991. Four years later, 1995, the first 33' wide collector, with a dual drive was developed and patented. In 1998, Polychem was acquired by ConMat. Polychem ended the decade with a splash and patented the first 33' wide non-metallic telescopic head-shaft.
Brentwood Industries, Inc., a family owned business, purchased Polychem Systems and NRG during 2003. The WEDA Product line was added in 2005. The first 40' wide collector was developed in 2008. In addition, the universal wear shoe, non-metallic chain guard, and SmartGuardtm Monitoring System have been introduced within the last two years.
