About Purolite®

Purolite's Primary Focus is Resins for Ion Exchange, Adsorbents, Catalysts, and Special Applications.

Purolite® Corporation is a privately owned company, established in 1981. Since that time, Purolite has grown to become a leading supplier of specialty resins for the ion exchange, catalyst, absorbents and specialty applications markets worldwide.

Purolite has a global manufacturing capability with factories in Philadelphia USA, Victoria Romania, and Hangzhou China coupled with an established network of sales offices, distributors and agents located close to our customers. Purolite continues to develop its manufacturing capacity, product quality and innovation through investment in new equipment and improved research facilities.

Purolite has the largest commitment to R&D of any resin producer globally with five R&D facilities in China, Romania, Russia , UK, and USA.  We strive to develop products that will give our customers a competitive edge. Our ability to quickly custom configure a solution that fits each client's requirements is what sets Purolite apart from the competition.

Our research and development is aimed at perfecting our existing products, discovering new products for existing applications and finding new applications for our core technologies. Collaboration with our customers on specific needs is key to our success. Purolite is committed to developing products that have the minimum possible environmental impact and is a prime manufacturer and distributor of products which are widely used in; pharmaceutical production; microchips (where our low TOC resins meet the demand for Ultra Pure water for manufacturing semiconductors); potable water; chemical and refining industries; catalysis; the food and beverage industry; metals extraction; metals finishing; electroplating; nuclear power generation; chromatographic separation and adsorbent chemistries.

With our market leading manufacturing capacity, broad product range and record of innovative research, Purolite has a unique commitment to the specialty resins market place.

Ground & Potable Water

Ground & Potable Water

Effluent Water Treatment

Effluent water treatment and recovery of materials from effluent water streams is a growing use for ion exchange resins. Purolite is a market leader in the fields of:

  • Recovery and recycle of waters and condensates.
  • Separation and recovery of valuable organic and inorganic compounds and elements.
  • Separation and recovery of precious metals.
  • Removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons.
  • Decolourisation of waste streams before discharge to water courses.
  • Decontamination of radioactive wastes and effluents.
  • Removal of pesticide residues from waste water streams.

Typical Purolite® products used in these applications are:

  • Metal chelators
  • Macronet adsorbents
  • Nuclear grade resins
  • Coarse bead anion exchangers

Colloidal Iron Removal

Colloidal iron is a very fine solid particulate material (typically between 0.1 and 0.001 microns in diameter) which, when suspended in water, can neither be settled nor be filtered.

Fortunately, these particles can be removed by utilising a Purolite® Macroporous Strong Base Anion resin. Metal hydrides, metal oxides, and colloidal matters are removed by both these Purolite® resins when in the chloride form. The operating capacity (or loading factor) is determined by on-site testing with pilot scale units.

Purolite® A501P is regenerated with Sodium Chloride solution. The colloidal iron being removed from the resin by the brine squeeze effect of the NaCl.

Colloidal Silica Removal

Colloidal Silica is composed of very fine solid particulate matter (typically between 0.1 and 0.001 microns in diameter) which, when suspended in water will neither be settled nor be filtered.

Colloidal Silica is non-ionic, and is often called non-reactive silica. It is essential to remove colloidal silica from water to be used in semiconductor applications and high pressure boiler operations. Loading factors are typically determined by bench or pilot testing. Purolite® A501P is regenerated with caustic soda.

Typically, Purolite® A501P would be used as the polisher for existing Strong Base Anion silica removal application, and regeneration, with caustic soda, should be at the same temperature as required for the SBA resin.

Heavy Metals Removal

Heavy metals, such as Lead, Copper, Zinc, and Silver, are typically present as multivalent cations. These ions are strongly held by both Strong Acid and Weak Acid Cation resins.

In potable water supplies heavy metals are normally present at very low levels. Even so, drinking water benefits greatly by the removal of these contaminants, and systems have been independently designed to achieve this. Such designs are typically 'throw away', non-regenerable, in-line or pour-through cartridges.

In industrial waste waters, heavy metals are usually present in much higher concentrations and need to be removed for obvious environmental reasons. For a more detailed review on specific heavy metal contaminant removal, please see the Purolite Chelation Systems bulletin.

Nitrate Removal

Nitrate removal by Purolite® ion exchange is accomplished with Purolite SBA resins, which are brine regenerated. Purolite SBA resins exchange the nitrate ion for the chloride ion.

The Purolite® SBA resins of choice are: A300, A400, A520E, A600. These Purolite resins can be used in separate vessels, or they may be top dressed on the cation resin bed within a mixed resin bed system, where it is recommended that a minimum 15cm or 6' Purolite Nitrate removal resin bed be top dressed. This can be successful when the water Hardness is less than 1.7 mg/l or 10 gpg.
