Overview

QUA® develops and manufactures both Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes and Electrodeionization (EDI) stacks.  These advanced membrane products are used in the water, wastewater, and water reuse markets. Sold exclusively through a global network of qualified OEM's, QUA's product offering includes their innovative Fractional Electrodeionization (FEDI®) stack, which has superior hardness tolerance compared to the other electrodeionization products on the market and their NSF Certified Q-SEP® Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes.

The Fractional Electrodeionization (FEDI®) stack was developed by taking into account the limitations of conventional Electrodeionization (EDI). The patented dual voltage process allows for a higher flexibility and tolerance to inlet water conditions, thus lowering the risk of scaling, and improving the plant's design economics and reliability. FEDI stacks are available in three different models which can be applied either for higher hardness tolerance or high water flow rates

Hardness is the scaling component and the main limiting factor for feed conditions in a conventional EDI. By incorporating a two-stage separation process with different voltages the FEDI® process is able to:

  • Achieve a higher hardness tolerance by having distinctly different concentrate chambers with separate reject streams and thus reducing the potential of hardness scaling.
  • Optimize power consumption by using higher electrical current only where required.
  • Ensure the best water quality, continuously & consistently by removing a major part of the deionization load in the 'hardness removal zone', while residual ionic impurities are effectively removed in the 'silica removal zone', which stays in a polishing mode.

The current range of FEDI® products includes three distinct models:

  1. FEDI-1 (Dual Voltage Operation)
  2. FEDI-2 (Single or Dual Voltage Operation)
  3. FEDI-2HF (Single Voltage Operation)

Our NSF certified Q-SEP® Ultrafiltration membranes are manufactured by the patented ‘cloud point precipitation process' which incorporate high-strength, hollow fibers with uniform pore size distribution and deliver superior performance. The Q-SEP® Ultrafiltration membranes are made from a hydrophilic polyether sulfone (PES) material with excellent low fouling characteristics.

Q-SEP Ultrafiltration modules can be used as dead-end filtration or in cross flow mode. The fibers are available with 0.8 mm ID fibers suitable for feed water with low turbidity and 1.2 mm ID fibers suitable to treat water with higher turbidity. These hollow fiber membranes operate under a pressurized inside-out flow configuration.

Q-SEP Features

  • Superior module design
  • Consistent pore sizes
  • High porosity along the entire length of fiber
  • Quality checks to ensure integrity of individual fibers prior to module assembly

Advantages of the Q-SEP® vs. Conventional Media Filtration:

  • Improved filtrate quality
  • SDI typically less than 1
  • Removal of virus and bacteria
  • Removal of microbiological matter
  • Removal of colloidal matter
  • No need to add coagulant chemicals for most applications
  • Improvement of downstream Reverse Osmosis performance

FEDI - Fractional Electrodeionization

FEDI - Fractional Electrodeionization

The Electrodeionization (EDI) process, invented over 20 years ago, is a continuous, chemical-free process that removes ionized and ionizable impurities from the feed water using DC power. EDI is most commonly used to treat Reverse Osmosis (RO); permeate and replace Mixed Bed (MB) ion exchange; producing high purity water of up to 18 M Ω.cm. EDI eliminates the need to store and handle hazardous chemicals required for resin regeneration and the ...
