Over the years, thousands of our Petro-Barrier™, Petro-Pipes® and Petro-Plugs® have been installed across the United States, Canada, and throughout the world. As you look through this site you will see that our capabilities range from retrofitting storm drains for 100% oil spill containment to engineering and manufacturing custom products for a multitude of applications. All of our products have been proven in actual spills from cold to hot oil to a transformer explosion that subjected the Petro-Pipe to more three hours of fire: No oil, water or foam was released during or after the fire was extinguished.
Please read through this site and make a list of questions or applications and let us show you how SPI can solve your containment needs. The Petro-Barrier, Petro-Pipe, Petro-Plug and our latest addition, the Sentry portable containment system, can provide all your spill containment needs with the ability to handle rain water discharge while providing 100% total oil spill containment.
William “Bill” Gannon founded Solidification Products International (SPI) in 1991 to develop and manufacture solidification technology and products for oil spill cleanup and unique industrial applications. Mr. Gannon’s expertise in oil spill cleanup as executive vice president of Liquid Waste Technologies from 1985 to 1991[HazMat article] and use of polymer technology on oil spills such as the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was a key factor in the creation of SPI to promote this unique technology. SPI's early years were focused on oil and water absorbent products called Oil Bond and Water Bond. A natural evolution from spill cleanup to oil spill spread prevention occurred during the late 1990s
SPI’s development and patenting of Petro-Barrier, Petro-Plug and Petro-Pipe provided solutions to SPI customers’ oil containment needs with a passive, cost-effective solution for oil sheen removal, oil spill containment and rain water drainage. SPI holds three U.S. and two Canadian patents, with other U.S. and foreign patents pending. SPI’s Rain Drains – Oils Contained technology is the perfect combination with SPI's Oil Bond and Water Bond superior absorbency original cleanup products.
SPI provides the most cost-effective and technically advanced yet functionally simple oil spill containment solutions for a wide variety of applications in two general areas:
The most numerous installations of SPI’s patented systems involve compliance with spill prevention control and countermeasure (SPCC) regulations. SPI’s systems and products have been installed around the world in the electric industry for oil-filled equipment such as transformers and by many other industries in a myriad of oil spill containment applications.
After 20 years, SPI continues to innovate and manufacture products for use during oil spill release or containment applications.
Spill Containment Solutions
SPI provides 100% oil spill containment for any kind of above-ground hydrocarbon storage container. SPI products have been used by the following types of companies and for the following applications:
SPI’s Petro-Barrier, Petro-Pipe and Petro-Plug solutions allow water drainage, prevent oil spills, minimize cleanup costs, reduce liability, and provide compliance with SPCC regulations.
Stormwater Drainage Systems
As a point-source discharge solution for industrial drains, sewers and waterways, SPI’s Petro-Plug stormwater drain products are used at airports, storage areas, transformers, and nuclear power plants, among others. SPI is the only company that offers 100% oil containment for industrial drainage, while allowing rainwater drainage prior to an oil spill.
Portable Spill Containment
SPI’s Sentry portable spill containment berms can be deployed practically anywhere oil may be spilled, including FRAC tanks, drum storage areas, aircraft, truck cleaning areas and temporary-location transformers. Sentry products use SPI’s Petro-Pipe to filter oil sheen, with immediate sealing on contact with an oil spill. The berms, which are easy to install and move, are typically 8 or 12 inches tall but can be made to any size. The specialized material (30-ounce modified vinyl) is rated for a 10-year life under harsh ultraviolet light.
Floor Drainage Containment
Any place where there is a floor drain and potential spillage, SPI’s Petro-Plug can be used. Whether in a warehouse, a factory, a garage, a boiler room, an elevator shaft, a hospital or a school, the Petro-Plug can be fitted to practically any drain, where it seals completely when an oil spill hits it.
Spill Cleanup And Recovery
While SPI is not a cleanup contractor, its spill cleanup and recovery products have been used in hundreds of oil spills and maintenance cleanup applications on both land and water. SPI’s Oil Bond® spill cleanup and recovery products absorb and solidify oil, transforming it into a solid, cohesive material that will pass the EPA’s TCLP test and can be landfilled or incinerated. This process allows for fast, efficient and economical cleanup. Oil Bond is listed (as M-27) on the EPA's National Contingency Plan (NCP) Miscellaneous Oil Spill Control Agent (MOSCA) list. Add-on products include booms, pillows, and pads.
SPI WaterBond
SPI WaterBond is used in solidification of water-based sludges, drilling muds, off-spec cosmetics and lotions.

Spill ContainmentSPI developed Petro-Barriers™ to provide the most effective, functionally simple, cost-effective and nearly zero-maintenance solution for spill containment area stormwater drainage. In hundreds of installations of its products, oil has never gotten past any of SPI's products.Anyone with experience in this field is familiar with oil/water separators, oil stop valves and oil sensing switches for pumps. None of these expensive, high-maintenance ... |

SPI WaterBondSPI WaterBond is a granular polymer that quickly transforms large volumes of sludge, mud and other aqueous-based liquids into dry, firm semi-solids without a significant volume increase. Because of its high absorbency, only a small amount of SPI WaterBond is required to treat large volumes of liquids. SPI WaterBond is particularly useful for material destined for landfill disposal. |
