Waste To Energy Since 1980, SSI has been designing and manufacturing size reduction systems to prepare solid wastes for thermal treatment or conversion to alternative fuel. SSI has supplied hundreds of systems worldwide for generating energy from many different waste materials—from industrial, municipal, and hazardous wastes to tires, mill waste, wood and other organic materials.
The growing diversity of conversion technologies and feed systems means there is no “one size fits all” system for shredding. With multiple low-speed,high-torque technologies to offer, SSI is able to address each customer’s unique application with systems known for high-performance, low-maintenance, and on-line reliability. From coarse shredding to spec product sizes, SSI offers the broadest line of low-speed, high-torque shredders available for:
Hazardous Materials
SSI has developed a line of primary reducers, PRI-MAX, dedicated to the Construction & Demolition (C&D) industry.
PRI-MAX shreds, tears, and breaks bulky debris into manageable pieces that are easy to transport and economical to dispose of.
High-Capacity
PRI-MAX shredders process between 1-150 tons per hour while achieving up to 80% volume reduction. The heavy-duty, open-grate design of the cutting table allows fines, such as rock and dirt, to fall through, reducing wear on the cutters. The design and materials of the PRI-MAX ensure longer life and lower operations and maintenance costs.
E-scrap processing and recycling has recently become a booming volume business.
Until recently, the process of reclaiming precious metals from electonic scrap involved the labor-intensive process of dismantling of components manually to extract the precious metals.
SSI has developed a line of shredding systems to make this metals-liberation process far easier and more economical, allowing e-scrap recyclers to accelerate the payback from their investment.
SSI offers fully integrated, custom designed systems for effective pre-processing of hazardous wastes.
Process Overview
Drummed and bulk wastes enter the system, passing through a double-door airlock. Material is then processed through two hydraulic shredders. Following the size reduction process, provided by SSI Shredding Systems, material is then discharged to downstream equipment to complete the blending process.
Hazardous Materials
Safety & Customization
SSI offers fully integrated, custom designed shredding systems for destruction of a variety of medical wastes:
Size / Volume Reduction
Shredding of metals for volume reduction can simplify material handling, minimize storage space and reduce transportation and disposal costs. SSI has built shredders to process light scrap in a metal recycling yard, or materials generated by a manufacturer, such as aluminum extrusion from a door or window manufacturer. SSI shredders have also been used to prepare metals to feed into high speed hammermills.
Recycling / Remelting
Metals destined for recycling are often baled or briquetted to facilitate handling and reduce transportation costs. However, once material arrives at the processing facility, processors often wish to shred bales or briquettes to improve furnace feeding and the efficiency of the remelting or delacquering process. Shredding also helps to liberate trapped contamination, upgrading the quality of the metal and its value.
Precious Metal Recovery
Electronic scrap including computer drives, monitors, telephone switching gear, and circuit boards contain precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. Recovery facilities have used SSI low-speed shredders to preprocess bulky components to make it easier to liberate metals.
SSI addresses a broad range of paper shredding applications, including loose or boxed office paper, books, magazines, baled paper, stacked sheets, and rolls of paper.
Product / Security Destruction
SSI builds mobile or stationary shredders for publishers to destroy returned, misprinted, or outdated books, for companies to destroy paper files for security purposes.
Pre-Baling
SSI shredders are frequently used to shred scrap paper prior to baling. Shredding facilitates handling and makes the bale density more consistent.
Pre-Milling
Very sensitive documents are often processed into an extremely small particle by a high-speed mill (granulator, disintegrator or knife mill). Pre-processing material in an SSI low-speed shredder first can increase the entire system's capacity, while reducing wear and damage to the high-speed mill.
Pre-Incineration
Shredded paper is easier to handle and meter-feed into an incinerator. Shredding also allows the paper to burn more thoroughly and rapidly.
Pulping Applications
SSI shredders are ideal for shredding baled paper and cardboard prior to hydropulpling.
SSI makes shredding systems designed for plastics and textiles shredding.
Pre-Granulation
Shredding plastics prior to granulation facilitates handling, increases efficiency, and saves the high-speed granulator from wear and damage.
Purgings
Purgings are loosely formed masses of plastic that have been discharged from plastic processing equipment following a material or color run. Although these materials can be processed for re-use, they are often too large to be processed by granulators alone. Pre-shredding these purgings facilitates granulator feeding and reduces 'slamming' (or heavy impact) and its effect on equipment performance and maintenance.
Textiles
Textiles, whether they come in the form of rolled carpets, furniture, mattresses, or cloth, tend to unravel and wrap around the shafts of conventional shredders, causing them to jam. SSI has developed shredding systems that are specifically designed to deal with this inherent problem, cutting textiles into small pieces rather than long strands.
Typical Plastics We Shred:
Manufacturers can shred defective, mispackaged, or date-expired goods to prevent theft, thereby reducing associated losses and liability risks.
Material Recovery
Waste materials (or defective products) can be shredded to allow recycling or re-use. Wastes generated in manufacturing process such as plastic, rubber, or fibers are ideal candidates for reprocessing. Packaged goods can be shredded to open containers. Contents such as detergent can be collected and separated for repackaging, while contents such as canned food can be separated and reprocessed into animal feed.
Security Regulations
With new legislation placing more requirements on institutions to protect personal data helping to eliminate identity theft, SSI shredders are ideal for information security destruction.
SSI builds shredding and reduction systems for a wide variety of solid waste applications.
Landfill
We have engineered many solutions for landfill operations. We've built shredding systems to reduce material prior to compaction for transfer. We've built onsite shredders for use at landfill sites. In each case, shredding greatly improves the efficiency of the transported waste and extends the capacity and life of the landfill.
Composting
For municipalities that have organic waste recycling programs, SSI has provided shredders to meet specific needs. Some composting operations require only larger strips, others feed the waste through a series of shredders prior to processing through a high-speed mill. We've built systems for all kinds of composting needs.
Thermal Treatment
Operations that incinerate waste, whether for simple destruction or the burning of alternative fuels for energy, have found SSI shredders to vastly improve the combustion efficiency of the material.
From high-volume Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) to lower volume rough shred operations, SSI has a reputation for reliable and productive tire shredding systems.
No Tires Are Too Big
No tires are too large for shredding SSI shredders process passenger, truck, off-road, heavy equipment, and aircraft tires.
Our TDF systems can process tires at rates up to 25 tph. Most operations make 1'-2' at 5-15 tph. Scrap tire applications We build shredding systems for TDF (Tire Derived Fuel) processing and rough shredding. SSI tire shredders can also be configured for mobile or stationary operations.
