About Us

Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments, Inc. is the worldwide leader in the application of field portable, laboratory and on-line continuous process monitors for measuring and monitoring hydrocarbons in water. We are in the exclusive business of making laboratory, field portable and on-line instruments based in UV fluorescence technology.

Our staff of experts understands customer needs, problems and applications for monitoring petroleum hydrocarbons in water. Customer satisfaction is our first priority.

Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments is unparalleled in fluorescence (UVF) expertise for the measurement of hydrocarbons in water and soil. Our customers enjoy the benefits of our worldwide exposure, product development and distribution network. We have more UVF instruments in service for oil in water measurement than all UVF competition combined.

We are experts in oil (hydrocarbon) in water monitors for concentrations ranging from ug/L (ppb) to mg/L (ppm). Detection limits for crude oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel and fuel oils have been demonstrated at 10 ppb in distilled water. As an example, a large number of our installed systems routinely monitor drinking water for gasoline and diesel fuel at 30 ppb in river water. We routinely customize our systems to meet highly specialized monitoring projects especially in the offshore oil production market.

We maintain an in-house laboratory that is specifically utilized for application confirmation and method development. We utilize in-house instrumentation and expertise to validate instrument performance for customer applications prior to manufacturing and delivering systems worldwide. Essentially, all customer applications are validated prior to instrument shipment to qualify the effectiveness of our products to meet customer needs. This speeds installation start-up and reinforces successful customer operation of our instruments.

We employ highly skilled field support personnel with field service available in all areas of the world. A worldwide support network allows customers to receive regional support for service and applications needs. Service personnel are deployed from regional support centers based in North America, Asia, Europe, West Africa and the Middle East.

TD-4100 XD General Purpose - General Industrial Oil in Water Monitor

The TD-4100 XD General Purpose monitor is a lower cost version of the industry standard TD-4100 XD and is designed for General Purpose areas (non-explosive atmospheres). It was designed for dirty water applications and uses our standard EZ Access Non-Contact Flowcell for lower maintenance. Field validation is via our CheckPOINT™ solid calibration check standard.

TurnerCIP (Clean in Place) System for Oil In Water Monitors

Most oilfield produced waters and other oily waste waters have high fouling potential for optical sensors. High Cost Ultrasonic Cleaning systems only address the local optical path and not the entire sample system. Our CIP (Clean In Place) addresses the entire sample system in the same way that CIP’s are used to clean heat exchangers and other oily systems. - Chemically cleans the complete sample system from sample take off to the drain from the ...

Monitoring Fuels in Stormwater

The Situation: A major pipeline company has large storage tank farms throughout the Western States. The pipeline company transports, stores, blends additives, and distributes gasoline, diesel and jet fuel to retail service stations and airports. Due to the quantity and movement of fuel at these facilities, there is always the potential for fuel spills. These facilities prevent out of compliance discharge by capturing all stormwater in storm drains which ...

Monitoring Crude Oil in Produced Water

The oil and gas production industry generates produced water. Produced water is typically a mixture of formation and injection process water that contains oil, salts, chemicals, solids and trace metals. Produced water is the primary waste product resulting from the separation of oil, gas and water at production facilities. The discharge of produced water to the environment is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States.
