Flesh Eating Bacteria Exposed in New Online Video
The IAQ Video Network produces another educational video about microbial pathogens.
Phoenix, AZ, May June 3rd, 2012 -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health. The latest educational video discusses flesh eating bacteria.
Necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating bacteria, is a rapidly progressing disease which destroys muscle, fat and skin tissue. The term necrotizing refers to something that causes the body’s tissue to die.
Many different types of bacteria can cause this infection. They include the following:
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Vibrio vulnificus
- Clostridium perfringens
- Bacteroides fragilis
- Aeromonas hydrophila
Flesh eating bacteria does not actually eat human tissues. It causes destruction by releasing toxins that destroy the surrounding tissue. These infections are generally more likely to occur in people with compromised immune systems.
“These types of infections typically begin locally at a site of trauma that has allowed the bacteria to enter the body,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video. “The infection may begin as little more than a small tender bump on the skin. Infected people may complain of an intense pain that may seem unusual. As the infection progresses, often within just hours, the tissue may become swollen. It releases harmful toxins that kill surrounding tissues and affects blood flow to the infected part of the body. The surrounding tissue will begin to die and the bacteria may then enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body. We hope this video helps to educate people about flesh eating bacteria and the signs to be aware of.”
