Gouda - Imtech (IM-AE, technical services provider in Europe) announces its involvement in Sweden in realising the energy-efficient technical infrastructure at two leading research institutes, the European Spallation Source (ESS) and the MAX IV Laboratory. Both will be situated near the Lund University. The order package, spread across various implementation phases, could run to 30 million euro or more. Several Swedish Imtech business units will be involved.
René van der Bruggen, CEO Imtech: 'Imtech has recently acquired Sydtotal. This is a specialist in energy technology, energy savings and high-quality air and climate solutions. This company has its own Energy Efficiency Competence Centre, developing energy efficiency models together with institutes such as Lund University. This unique competence has partly led to Imtech being involved at an early stage in the development and implementation of energy efficiency at two leading research institutes: the European Spallation Source and the MAX IV Laboratory.'
European Spallation Source
Within the EU, Sweden received the majority vote for realising the European Spallation Source, a new particle accelerator comparable in strenght to CERN in Geneva. Lund University will be the location for this high-tech research institute, researching micro-materials, structural chemistry, biology and geophysics. The total investment amount to around 1.2 billion euro, with the Swedish and Danish government financing more than 40%. The complex will be visited annually by approximately 5,000 predominantly foreign scientists. Imtech is partly responsible for preparatory studies of the energy infrastructure in this energy-efficient and climate neutral building.
MAX IV Laboratory
MAX IV (MaxLab IV) will also be located in Lund. This is a high-tech research institute for next generation synchrotron radiation research. The main sources at the new laboratory are two storage rings of 1.5 GeV and 3 GeV for research into particle acceleration, with a state-of-the-art low 'emittance' (bandwidth of the particles) for soft and hard x-rays. This solution makes the production of so-called synchrotron radiation with optimum research properties possible. The MAX IV Laboratory design also comprises an option for the development of a free-electron laser. The total investment amounts to a few hundred million euro and the laboratory will be visited annually by almost 1,000 scientists. In an early stage Imtech introduced a holistic approach to energy demand by creating an energy flow chart for the entire facility. Imtech has designed the recovery system of excess heat from the process to the district heating system in Lund. Imtech is also responsible for the design and documentation of the complex ventilation and climate control. Today Imtech has a role as energy coordinator for the whole project. Imtech will work in phases with various business units to realise the technical infrastructure at this research institute.
