Pöyry takes part in ensuring safe final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Finland

Pöyry's Water & Environment Business Group has been awarded design agreements by Posiva Oy on expert work regarding the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel at the Olkiluoto and Loviisa nuclear power plants. The assignments include hydrological studies of the final disposal research of spent nuclear fuel and chemical studies of groundwater as well as groundwater flow measurements to be performed at Olkiluoto. The order value has been booked into the 4 quarter 2011 order stock.

The studies and measurements will enable the effects of groundwater flows on the disposal site and on technical barriers over the years to be anticipated and thus effectively eliminating various risk factors. The objective is to ensure the safety of final disposal in the long run. The parties have agreed not to disclose the grand total of the agreements.

According to the schedule confirmed by the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2003, Posiva is preparing for submitting a construction permit application for the final disposal plant for spent nuclear fuel at the end of this year. As per the design agreements signed, Pöyry will contribute to the work aiming for submitting the application.
