With new PureSpeed tips, Rainin revolutionizes protein purification

Oakland, Calif. -- With the release of its new PureSpeed tips, Rainin Instrument, a METTLER TOLEDO subsidiary, has revolutionized protein purification. The new technology, which contains the affinity resin within a pipette tip, not only accelerates and simplifies workflow, but produces proteins of higher concentration and purity than conventional methods.

Across the life sciences, gravity-fed affinity columns and spin columns have for decades been the predominate methods for concentrating and purifying native and recombinant proteins. These methods are time consuming and require relatively large buffer volumes to elute target proteins, leading to sample dilution effects and the need for an additional step to concentrate the protein for an assay.

PureSpeed radically simplifies the protein purification process by securing a packed affinity resin in the very end of a pipette tip. Sample is drawn back and forth over the packed resin bed, delivering greater saturation of the resin, and an efficient wash step ensures the highest purity.

So how does PureSpeed deliver such highly concentrated proteins? In addition to its highly effective capture and wash processes, the final step in the purification process requires only a small amount of elution buffer to release protein from the resin. Minimizing the amount of residual buffer delivers the highest concentration possible and eliminates the need for a separate concentration step.

“Used in conjunction with Rainin’s new E4 XLS electronic pipette, researchers have a powerful system that automates many of the purification steps,” says Dr. Suparna Mundodi, PureSpeed product manager. “With the PureSpeed mode on the E4 XLS, the pipette’s digital screen guides researchers through customizing the protocol, which can then be stored onboard the pipette for future use.”

Multichannel E4 XLS pipettes make it possible to process up to 12 protein samples in parallel, saving valuable time and enabling researchers to scale sample work from microliter to milliliter, depending on their needs.

PureSpeed Protein Tips are available with ProA, ProG or IMAC resins in packs of 12, either 200µL or 1000µL. For the PureSpeed system, Rainin offers a complete starter kit that includes a 200µL or 1000µL E4 XLS electronic pipette, PureSpeed tips in any of the three resin types, a deep well plate and base unit, ColorTrak™ guide and complete instructions. Starter kits are also available without the E4 XLS. The E4 XLS is available in single channel, 8 channel and 12 channel models.
