Leaders of UN, US declare 2009 the year of climate change
With nations set to conclude negotiations on an ambitious new greenhouse gas emissions agreement this December, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and United States President Barack Obama have stressed the need for 2009 to be the year of climate change. Obama waters down carbon auctioning plan
President Barack Obama last week gave the first indication that he is willing to water down some aspects of his plans for carbon cap-and-trade scheme in an attempt to get the legislation passed as swiftly as possible. The president had said on the campaign trail that his proposals for a cap-and-trade scheme designed to cut emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 would see carbon intensive firms have to buy the carbon allowances they require at auction.
