Managing the imbalance between energy supply and demand
Renewable energy may help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it presents a problem for electricity suppliers: how to meet peak demand levels with increasing reliance on intermittent energy sources. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is both hailed as a “silver bullet” for the coal industry, and reviled as a pipe dream. The reality is that the US needs CCS, and a comprehensive policy framework for rapid development and deployment. Undoubtedly, CCS has many detractors.
