Low-cost MIT system could revolutionize global energy production
A team led by MIT students this week successfully tested a prototype of what may be the most cost-efficient solar power system in the world--one team members believe has the potential to revolutionize global energy production. The system consists of a 12-foot-wide mirrored dish that team members have spent the last several weeks assembling. The dish, made from a lightweight frame of thin, inexpensive aluminum tubing and strips of mirror, concentrates sunlight by a factor of 1,000--creating heat so intense it could melt a bar of steel. To demonstrate the system`s power, Spencer Ahrens, who just ... |

Major technological progress needed to make renewable energy affordable
Major technological progress needed to make renewable energy affordable says a study by the RAND corpoaration. Dramatic progress in renewable energy technology is needed if the United States desires to produce 25 percent of its electricity and motor vehicle fuel from renewable sources by 2025 without significantly increasing consumer costs, according to a RAND Corporation study. Produced by the RAND Environment, Energy and Economic Development program, the study provides a `snapshot` of the nation`s potential energy expenditures if a requirement was imposed that 25 percent of electricity and motor ... |

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO)
The Anguil Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) destroys air toxics and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are discharged in industrial process exhausts. The Anguil system achieves VOC destruction through the process of high temperature thermal oxidation, converting the VOCs to carbon dioxide and water vapor, recycling released energy to reduce operating costs.
