South Korea commits US$85bn to develop eco-friendly industries
The South Korean government this week released further details of its plan to invest $85bn (52.4bn) in `green growth` areas over the next five years as part of its economic stimulus package. The sum is equivalent to around two per cent of the country`s annual gross domestic product through to 2013 and is intended to help generate $162bn (£99.9bn) in economic output and create up to 1.8m jobs.  Under the package, which was formally announced this week, capital will be provided for research and development in renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, hybrid cars and biofuels.  Meanwhile, ...
E.ON, GDF Suez fined EUR 553m each for European gas market sharing
The European Commission has imposed fines totalling €1 106 000 000 on E.ON AG and its subsidiary E.ON Ruhrgas AG (of Germany) and on GDF Suez SA (of France) for market sharing in breach of EC Treaty rules on cartels and restrictive business practices (Article 81). E.ON/E.ON Ruhrgas and GDF Suez are fined €553 000 000 each.
