Green transport future for Heathrow
Written by Mark Stephens The future of green transport was revealed at the Science Museum on August 12th. A driverless electric shuttle cab was unveiled, which by next year will be taking thousands of passengers to and from Terminal Five at London`s Heathrow Airport. The Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) system, worth £2.5 million, can travel at speeds of up to 25mph using a combination of lasers and computers for navigation. Controversial `cash for clunkers` schemes start to show green gains
More than four in five of the vehicles traded in under the US `cash for clunkers` scheme have been SUVs or pick-up trucks, according to new figures from the US Department of Transport. The scrappage scheme, which has been modelled on similar schemes rolled out across Europe, pays customers up to US$4,500 (GBP2,700) to turn in older vehicles and purchase a replacement that has to achieve only a 4mpg fuel-efficiency improvement on the previous car.
