Space technology helps find space, reduce pollution, and save money
Today, freight transport by lorries and containers is a highly automated and optimised business. However, even with the best planning possible, useful space is often left empty. Two German inventors have come up with an idea on how to use satellites to improve the allocation of truck capacity. At the 2008 European Satellite Navigation Competition, backed by ESA`s Technology Transfer Programme, German T-Systems/DHL put up a prize for the best idea on how to utilise transport capacity better. They were looking for a solution to scrutinise vehicles` shipping space and identify and localise unused ...
Respiratory doctors call for EU action on climate change
The risk of premature death due to temperature increases associated with global warming is six times higher for Europeans who are already suffering from respiratory problems, according to a paper published this week. Two leading health organisations, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), want to ensure that the respiratory health effects and costs of climate change are considered in all discussions and recommended actions at the EU level. The position paper published by the ERS describes the heavy burden of temperature increases and poor ...

Optical Sensing Atop Mount Everest

Recently, NASA scientists made a trek up Mount Everest to conduct a number of experiments and observations. Ocean Optics provided the group with Jaz – a modular optical sensing suite – for the task. The Jaz was used to determine UV intensity at Everest where such levels are extremely high. The handheld Jaz unit included solar irradiance scripting language, an SD card for storage and a lithium-ion battery. The team used Jaz to measure solar irradiance and UV levels at Everest’s extreme altitude to better understand ozone depletion. Jaz’s compact, rugged design allowed it to perform brilliantly in an incredibly challenging application -- on the world’s highest mountain.
