US Supreme Court to determine Navy`s use of high-intensity sonar
The nation’s highest Court heard arguments to determine whether President Bush had the authority earlier this year to exempt the US Navy from federal environmental laws governing the use of high-intensity sonar. The White House issued the exemptions after a federal court ordered the Navy to safeguard marine mammals against harm from high-intensity, mid-frequency active sonar being used in a series of exercises off southern California. Those safeguards were sought by a coalition of conservation groups led by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The Navy acknowledges that sonar can ... |

2008 ozone hole larger than last year - ESA
The 2008 ozone hole – a thinning in the ozone layer over Antarctica – is larger both in size and ozone loss than 2007 but is not as large as 2006. Ozone is a protective atmospheric layer found in about 25 kilometres altitude that acts as a sunlight filter shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays, which can increase the risk of skin cancer and cataracts and harm marine life. This year the area of the thinned ozone layer over the South Pole reached about 27 million square kilometres, compared to 25 million square kilometres in 2007 and a record ozone hole extension of 29 million square ... |

The IONICON High-Resolution, High-Sensitivity PTR-TOF-MS is a combination of the very low online detection limit for VOCs (5 pptv), our PTR-MS products are known for, and the speed of a time of flight mass spectrometer. The TOF component gives the ability to analyze a whole mass spectrum in a split second with a mass resolution of more than 4000 and up to 6000. Even isobaric species can therefore be distinguished with virtually no instrumental mass range limitation and a linearity range over six orders of magnitude (5 pptv-10ppmv) due to our unique soft and effective proton transfer reaction ionization method.
