Google Earth offers bird`s eye view of US emissions
US businesses can now easily track pollution from their facilities and could soon be able to compare the carbon footprint of different streets, following the launch this week of a new interactive map of carbon emissions on Google Earth. The new application, which is based on maps and data compiled as part of the NASA-backed Vulcan project to better track US carbon emissions, allows users to view carbon emissions from factories, power plants, roads, and residential and commercial areas and compare their region`s performance with other parts of the country.

NASA`s launch of carbon-seeking satellite is unsuccessful
NASA`s Orbiting Carbon Observatory satellite failed to reach orbit after its liftoff on Feb. 24 from California`s Vandenberg Air Force Base. Preliminary indications are that the fairing on the Taurus XL launch vehicle failed to separate. The fairing is a clamshell structure that encapsulates the satellite as it travels through the atmosphere. The spacecraft did not reach orbit and likely landed in the ocean near Antarctica, said John Brunschwyler, the program manager for the Taurus XL. A Mishap Investigation Board is to determine the cause of the launch failure.
