Climate change could worsen effects of pollution on plants
Emissions from large point sources of pollution, such as heavy industry, have a detrimental effect on the plants growing in the local area. A new study suggests that predicted increases in global temperatures as a result of climate change may worsen the harmful effects of aerial pollution on plant diversity in susceptible areas. Researchers from Finland examined the effects of local, severe pollution on the diversity of plants near point sources of industrial emissions. By analysing a range of published data, the researchers explored the effects of different types of pollutants on the number of ... |

Tree biodiversity increases release of carbon from soils
Soils play an important role in the carbon cycle, containing more than two thirds of the total carbon held in terrestrial ecosystems. Concern about climate change and rising CO2 levels is driving research to understand carbon cycling through soils. New research suggests that in tropical regions greater tree diversity increases soil respiration (the release of carbon) rates, but also improves overall ecosystem health, which ultimately leads to greater carbon absorption.
Soil respiration is the main pathway through which carbon is transferred from soil into the atmosphere, with an estimated ... |
