US targets brownfield sites for solar makeover
The US is to explore the possibility of recycling its old brownfield sites as prime locations for new solar power generating facilities. Riverside and San Bernadino counties, which are located between Los Angeles and San Diego in California, are currently in talks with solar power companies about redeveloping both closed and capped landfill sites as well as land currently housing derelict public buildings.  The move follows the submission of bids by the providers in April, but has been accelerated by the US Department of the Interior`s announcement last month that it was looking for large ...
Biofuel and crop research grows by AUS$1.6m
The research team will identify the genes associated with key plant properties responsible for growth, flowering and grain-filling in grasses. They will use the advanced robotic and imaging plant research tools of the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF) to conduct the research.  The US Department of Energy (DOE) has recognised the unique, world-class capability that the APPF affords by providing the funds through its Plant Feedstock Genomics program.   The DOE will apply the results to biofuel grasses development and the CSIRO will increase the productivity of cereal food crops ...
