EU Biowaste Directive moves a pace closer
European Union Member States have asked the European Commission to table a directive on biowaste in 2010 “if appropriate” and consider local conditions when drafting the new law.
In December 2008, the Commission published a Green Paper on biowaste management in the EU and launched a consultation process to gather opinions on the possibility of a new Biowaste Directive.
The EC defines biowaste as biodegradable garden and park waste, food and kitchen waste from households, restaurants, caterers and retail premises, and comparable waste from food processing plants. The definition does not ... |

High-level forum stresses need to tackle radioactive waste in Central Asia
A high-level forum organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) wrapped up in Geneva this week with the adoption of a joint declaration stressing the need to tackle the challenge of radioactive waste in Central Asia. The meeting brought together over 100 representatives from the region, international organizations, donors and others to discuss the problems associated with the uranium tailing deposits – left over from mining during the Cold War in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan – which contain more than 800 million tons of radioactive and toxic waste.
