GBP 181.6m for project to save 391,000 tonnes of landfill waste
Waste facilities in Leicestershire and the South West will see major improvements thanks to a combined GBP 181.6 million in funding announced by Defra this week.  In Leicestershire, the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project is expecting to divert 98,000 tonnes of Biodegradable Municipal Waste from landfill in 2020. New EU legislation requiring collection and recycling of spent batteries
Revised EU legislation that aims to protect human health and the environment by ensuring waste batteries are properly collected and recycled has been implemented. The directive also makes producers responsible for the management of batteries once they become waste. Adopted by the European Parliament and Council in 2006, the revised Batteries Directive should be transposed by Member States into national law.
