Scotland`s recycling rates increase
Scotland’s recycling and composting rate has risen to 33.5 per cent for the year January to December 2008, according to new figures published by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency. The provisional figures show that Scotland has exceeded its recycling target of 30 per cent for 2008. The next target is 40 per cent by the end of 2010.  Data submitted to the Scottish Government’s WasteDataFlow shows that the recycling and composting rate for the third quarter of 2008/09 (October to December) increased to 31.7 per cent, an improvement on 29.2 per cent for the same quarter of 2007/2008.  SEPA ...
Novelis recycles record 39 billion cans
Aluminium giant Novelis has broken a company record by recycling an estimated 39 billion aluminium drink cans in the past year. Through recycling the company has reduced the need for 530,000 tonnes of primary aluminium avoiding five million tonnes of greenhouse gases.   Novelis president of global procurement and metal management Nick Madden said: “The GHGs avoided through our can recycling programme over the past year is the equivalent of taking more than 900,000 vehicles off the road for 12 months.  “When people look for ways to help the planet and reduce their carbon footprint, ...
