 | Copper firm Asarco agrees to pay US$13.5m for cleaning up of toxics In response to a demand for cleanup by the US Environmental Protection Agency, copper mining, smelting and refining giant Asarco says it will conduct contamination investigations and remove arsenic, lead and copper contaminated soil in the adjacent Arizona towns of Hayden and Winkleman. In addition, the Tucson-based company has agreed to spend up to $13.5 million on cleaning up the yards of residents in these towns located in southcentral Arizona.

 | Germany exempts 75% bioplastic bottles from deposit The European Bioplastics industry representation welcomes the regulation concerning bioplastic drink bottles established in the 5th Amendment of the German Packaging Directive. The amendment was passed on 4 April 2008. The regulation for bioplastic bottles will come into effect on 1 January 2009. These bottles ` produced from at least 75 percent renewable resources` will be exempted from the compulsory deposit for single use drink bottles until 31 December 2012. Manufacturers must however participate in a dual system of recycling for the bottles.
