Landfill waste found in containers returned from Brazil
Unsuitable waste mixed with plastic has been found in some of the waste containers that were recently repatriated from Brazil.
After forensic examination, environmental crime investigators from the Environment Agency have so far found nappies, wellington boots, torn and dirty textiles, cat food pouches and rotting cardboard in the containers. This has all been collected as evidence in the case.
Currently, 14 of the 81 containers, which were returned to the UK from Brazil, have been opened. Head of the Environment Agency’s National Environment Crime Unit Andrew Higham said:

Recyclers ignorant of chemicals legislation could face action
Many recyclers who manufacture or import do not realise they could face enforcement action if they have not pre-registered their recovered substances.
Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) regulations came into force in 2007 asking for recyclers which import above one tonne per legal entity or manufacture to pre-register any in-scope chemicals present in its recovered materials.
