Waste industry urged to sort out health and safety record
Waste management firms should step up efforts to improve the sector`s woeful health and safety record or risk missing out on the increased interest being shown in the industry by investors and high-profile customers. That is the warning from Stuart Wardlaw, director of the Safety and Environment Team at law firm Dickinson Dees LLP, who warned firms that fail to demonstrate a willingness to improve health and safety policies and practices could not only be at greater risk of legal action, but could also find it harder to attract the investors and customers increasingly interested in funding recycling ... |

Food waste a priority for Ireland, says EPA
Food waste has been highlighted as a top priority in Ireland to ensure the country doesn’t miss EU diversion targets for biodegradable municipal waste. Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency has published The National Waste Report 2007, stating food waste “is a priority”. Other progress indicators were that overall general waste generation had not increased from 2006. And, recycling rates had remained steady, with “good progress” found in relation to packaging.
The report also called for continued support for resource conservation initiatives such as the National Waste Prevention Programme.
