EC to discuss water scarcity and droughts at Zaragoza World Expo
At a one-day conference in Zaragoza stakeholders will discuss ways to use water more efficiently in the European Union. The conference follows the Communication on water scarcity and droughts presented by the European Commission in July 2007 and contributions will feed into the report the Commission is due to publish at the end of 2008 as a follow-up to its Communication. The report will tackle implementation and monitoring aspects of the policy options presented in the Communication. Greater efforts needed to provide safe water for more than 1 billion people - UN
More than one billion people still lack access to safe drinking water, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said this week, calling for greater efforts to achieve the water and sanitation targets set by world leaders in 2000. As part of the set of anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), countries pledged to halve the number of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015. “There has been progress towards achieving the water and sanitation MDGs, but not enough,” Mr. Ban said in a speech at an exposition in the Spanish city of Zaragoza on “Water and Sustainable Development.” ... |
