UN agencies, shipping corporations to tackle environmental threats
A Global Industry Alliance (GIA) was launched this week to tackle the threats of marine bio-invasions caused by the transfer of marine organisms from one environment to another, in ship ballast tanks. Ballast water is carried in cargo ships to provide needed stability. It is taken onboard at the start of every trip a ship makes and then pumped out on arrival. Some organisms in the ballast survive the trip and establish populations in new environments. Businesses urged to `wake up` to water risks
Global water shortages are a greater and more imminent threat to businesses than oil supplies running out, according to a major new report from the Ceres group of sustainable investors which urges firms and investors to undertake water risk assessments as a matter of urgency. The report, Water Scarcity & Climate Change: Growing Risks for Businesses and Investors, notes that water shortages are already causing disruption to large numbers of businesses and warns that the situation will worsen as the combination of population growth and climate change places further pressure on water supplies.
