New York to phase out bottled water for public sector
The Governor of New York has announced plans to ban the purchase of bottled water by state-owned agencies. he ban will cover both small bottles and those used by water coolers. State agencies will be expected to phase out their consumption of bottled water over the next six months. Governor David A Paterson said the move would save the state money as well as having obvious environmental benefits.
The move will make New York the second state, after Illinois, to scrap the use of bottled water. Similar initiatives have already taken place north of the border in Canada. Bottled water will be replaced ... |

Drinking water watched by Queensland’s seventh sense
CSIRO and a local water authority in Queensland, SEQWater, have joined forces to monitor the Lake Wivenhoe catchment, which spans an area about the size of the city of Brisbane, and supplies water to the region’s 1.5 million residents.
Approximately 120 nodes, using CSIRO`s FLECK™ smart wireless sensor network technology, are monitoring environmental conditions on Lake Wivenhoe and in the surrounding catchment.
CSIRO Senior Research Scientist, Dr Matthew Dunbabin said it is hoped that these sensors can provide the platform for the next generation of water quality monitoring systems.
