By making use of the suction current, the SMAVE vessel draws in floating debris and bulky waste.A grill-like bucket captures small and large garbage. The emptying of this bucket is activated by a hydraulic system controlled from within the cabin. The bucket is emptied into a containment bin with a capacity of 3 m (60 ft) for the smaller bin and 4 m (90 ft) for the largest bin. Continuous oil recovery and debris collection operations are ensured by an automatically activated secondary grill which halts the intake of rubbish during the emptying maneuver of the debris bucket. The larger SMAVE vessel is equipped with a lifting crane to remove the garbage bin when filled or for handling larger debris such as a logs or dead heads.
