Lindemann - Double-Acting Scrap Baling Presses

Our scrap baling presses enjoy an excellent reputation in scrap yards, car body plants, aluminum processing plants and non-ferrous metal remelting plants. They compact melted iron, sheet metal and wire scrap into square edged bales - a preferred feed material for steelworks, foundries and remelting plants. It has been a long way from the first hydraulic Lindemann scrap baling press launched in the 1920s to the new Lindemann RAS series.

RAS II – economical, medium-sized scrap baler.

With the double acting shear-type balers of the Lindemann RAS II series, our engineers not only met their goals with regard to operational safety, flexibility and operating costs, but even exceeded them. The RAS II scrap baling press with its two compactors produces higher density bales than the RAS I. The RAS II is one of the fastest and strongest scrap baling presses in its class worldwide.

Characteristics

Characteristics

Fast and efficient.

Special drive and unique control concept.

Our special drive and control concepts allow high throughput capacities at low energy consumption. A combination of solutions reduces the cycle times of RAS presses without increasing driving power. The Lindemann RAS series is the first generation of scrap balers performing at a peak pressure of 350 bars. As a result the same pressing forces can be achieved with smaller hydraulic cylinders – and smaller cylinders mean reduced oil delivery volumes. Since only a small percentage of all cylinder movements occurs in the high pressure range, the majority of press movements can be performed much faster with unchanged driving power.

Oil-transfer control unit for increased speed.

Another reason for the shorter cycle times is our special oil-transfer control unit. To increase the speed, it feeds hydraulic oil that returns from one cylinder directly into another cylinder that operates in the low pressure range. The hydraulic separation of pump flows allows simultaneous application of oil to several cylinders in a controlled manner.

Integrated intelligence.

Due to the new non-contact position measuring system, which is integrated in all hydraulic cylinders, annoying malfunctions of proximity and limit switches resulting from dirt and falling scraps are definitely a thing of the past. The integrated position measuring system also means that, for the first time ever, exact piston positions, speed and acceleration can be determined along the entire travel distance. Only then is it possible to optimally control the hydraulic switching points to reduce cycle times even further.

Safety

Safety

Protected and reliable.

Special protection mechanisms:

The comprehensive wear protection of the Lindemann scrap balers extends operating periods and reduces time-consuming maintenance and repair work. Furthermore, the design solutions of the RAS series facilitate the replacement of wear parts and eliminate the necessity for complete removal of compactor units. A computer-controlled central lubrication of all guides reduces wear and ensures trouble-free operation.

The special washboard profile of the RAS wear plates lessens the risk of cost-intensive breakdowns caused by compactor jams when processing cut-offs and thin strips of material.

Extra long guides on the compactor units result in low friction during forward movement. In addition, the long guides with the adjustable limit stops ensure that even in the event of wear the correct end position is reached at all times in pressurized condition. This requires correct settings.

Benefits

Benefits

Development, design, assembly – excellent to the last detail.

WearCon – a scrap baler comes forward.

Another innovation in the field of scrap balers is WearCon, our optional automatic wear monitoring system. With WearCon - patent pending – our presses generate an automatic and timely report, specifying an upcoming wear plate replacement. Wear indicators installed in exposed positions in the presses transmit the required information via an electric signal to the multi-information terminal. Thus, the plant operator can plan in advance spare parts procurement and perform wear plate replacement without urgency.

Compact and retained – this applies not only to scrap bales.

Strength calculations using the Finite Element Method (FEM) have resulted in highly compact and space-efficient designs. The idea of space-saving installation – of particular importance to the automotive industry – was also a decisive factor in the design and arrangement of the hydraulic system and the drive. Extensive factory pre-assembly, to the point of firm attachment of the hydraulic blocks and connection pipelines from the blocks to the cylinders, results in reduced on-site assembly and significantly improved commissioning conditions.

Integrated and visualized – dynamic and smooth.

The Lindemann multi-information terminal.

Our multi-information terminal ensures easy operation and, if necessary, easy troubleshooting. Graphics display, process data visualization and online help in the language of your choice represent state-of-the-art technology. Bale length and pressing force of the RAS series can be preselected at the multi-information terminal for flexible adaptation to logistics requirements. When combining the computerized press control with a weighing device, bales of uniform length and high density are produced. Operating data, production figures and status reports of the press can also be displayed and processed on decentralized computers. To ensure fast and cost-effective support, optional remote diagnostics as well as software updates via teleservice are available.

The Lindemann logic controls.

Application of the non-contact position measuring system now also allows for the first time dynamic oil level monitoring. The electronic monitoring system reports even slight oil losses, thus ensuring increased protection of hydraulic components and the environment. Computer simulations of the hydraulic logic control and the implementation of the findings resulted in new logic blocks. They produce faster - but nevertheless smoother - work cycles. For energy-conscious users, our optional energy saving mode and peak load monitoring ensure lower energy consumption and thus help to further reduce operating costs. Metso Minerals strives to achieve an efficient cost-benefit ratio in all areas: Thus, for instance, the pressing forces of Lindeman RAS scrap balers are determined by taking the required, economically justifiable specific pressing forces into account.
