Lindemann - Triple-Acting Scrap Baling Presses

The Lindemann series EtaPress and RAS III scrap baling presses comprises a great number of different, triple acting scrap balers. For each application there is a suitable scrap baling press, from the smallest model, the EP III 22-800 with a 0.9 m³ press box, to the largest press, the RAS III 66-2060 with a 19.2 m³ press box. Each scrap baler is equipped with three separately operating compactors that press the scrap material into compact bales. The drive and control concepts of the scrap baling presses allow an efficient operation with particularly low energy consumption and maximum throughput capacity.

Design solutions.

The meticulously planned construction of the scrap balers is sturdy and durable, due to extensive wear protection. The common wear parts of the compactors can be easily replaced, without having to remove the complete compactor units. Maintenance is simplified by corresponding detail solutions. An automatic central lubrication system results in virtually trouble-free operation and minimum wear.

Multi-information terminal.

Operation and any required troubleshooting are performed on the multi-information terminal. The terminal consists of a large display that shows all process-relevant information and status reports, and a user-friendly arranged number of control elements.

Bale length and pressing force can be preset. Thus, bales of uniform length at maximum density are possible by means of the press control. Remote diagnostics is available via the online interface of the multi-information terminal. It can also be used to continue data processing on decentralized computers.

Wide range of applications.

The application possibilities of the EP III / RAS III model series range from autonomous operation in scrap yards to integration in the manufacturing chain of press plants with a 24/7 operation, where accumulated metal scraps is on the spot compacted into bales. The bale dimensions of the series range from 250 mm to 600 mm. The specific pressing force (N/mm²) is approximately the same on all triple acting scrap balers. Thus, all scrap bales can be produced with similar high density – no matter what model is used.

Hydraulic drive.

The oil peak pressure of EtaPress III and RAS III has been increased like on all other current Lindemann scrap baler models. Thus, the same pressing forces can be achieved on smaller hydraulic cylinders, which in turn results in a noticeable oil reduction. At the same time, however, a hydraulic pressure of up to 350 bars is applied to only a small percentage of all cylinder movements in scrap baling presses. Most movements are carried out at lower pressures and can therefore be performed significantly faster at the same drive power. A logic control - specifically developed for the hydraulic system - ensures a smooth, but nevertheless fast working cycle of the cylinders. Computer simulations have been used to test various controls, and the findings have been implemented during the planning and construction of the hydraulic control.

Oil return.

To further increase the operating speed, an oil transfer control unit has been integrated. It feeds hydraulic oil that returns from one cylinder directly into another cylinder that operates in the low pressure range. Furthermore, a hydraulic pump flow separation allows simultaneous control of several cylinders and oil pressure application. These measures significantly reduce the overall cycle time of a pressing process.

Economic aspects.

The hydraulic systems of the scrap baling presses are designed for maximum press performance at economically justifiable costs. An increase in the specific pressing force (N/mm²) would produce only a slightly higher bale density requiring an unreasonably high energy input and resulting in additional wear. The optimized control allows best possible utilization of energy input, while simultaneously achieving high throughput capacity.

Compact and retained.

The compact and space-efficient design, using the Finite Element Method (FEM), also allows the integration of scrap baling presses in places with limited space. Due to the meticulously planned and efficient arrangement of the hydraulic system and drive, installation can also be performed in very tight spaces, as is frequently the case in the automotive industry. Furthermore, the very extensive factory pre-assembly - ranging from installation of hydraulic blocks and pipelines to cylinders – significantly reduces time and cost during installation and commissioning.

Various sizes.

Metso Lindemann scrap baling presses of the EP III and RAS III series are available in various sizes. This ensures that triple acting scrap balers can also be used in locations with less space.

Benefits

Powerful application – low-wear operation.

Image

The compactors of the triple acting scrap balers are even more powerful in deforming metal scrap than the presses of the RAS I and RAS II series.

At the same time, a large-volume feeding box is available that also allows efficient compacting of voluminous scraps. Thus, a wide spectrum of metal scraps can be compacted into dense bales.

Mechanical properties.

Each compactor is equipped with mechanical limit stops that prevent compactor jams or protrusions during compacting.
In addition, the compactors are supported by long parallel guides, so as to minimize the friction during forward and return movements. The wear plates of the scrap baling presses are equipped with a specially developed washboard profile to prevent compactors from jamming, particularly during compacting of cut-offs and thin, long metal strips.

Position measuring system.

The non-contact position measuring system - integrated in the hydraulic cylinders - makes downtimes caused by dirt or mechanical damage to proximity switches a thing of the past. The position of the cylinder piston can be accurately measured along the entire cylinder path. Apart from measuring the position, it is also possible to determine speed and acceleration of the cylinder piston at any time based on this information. With the integrated position measuring system, the switching points for hydraulics can be calculated even more accurately, resulting in faster and smoother cycles.

Wear monitoring.

The optional wear monitoring system WearCon monitors wear plates and generates a timely report, specifying an upcoming wear plate replacement. Its indicators, installed in exposed positions, transmit an electrical signal to WearCon as soon as a certain degree of wear has been reached. Thus, the actual wear plate replacement can be planned in advance and performed in due time.
