Facts: To protect our drinking water from pollution by sewage, more and more municipalities build waste water treatment plants (WWTP). The main residue from the WWTP is sewage sludge (biosolids) which can be used as a fertilizer in agriculture or as a fuel in power plants. Direct application on farmland is only possible between crop seasons and direct use as a fuel is not efficient due to the high moisture content of the biosolids. The storage of biosolids requires a lot of space due to high moisture content and can create enviromental pollution if stored on non sealed surfaces.
