Nowadays only the small percentage of the municipal waste is collected selectively. As a consequence there is a need to find the good solution for the stream of mostly unsorted municipal waste. The municipal waste contains big amount of recyclable materials, bio-degradable waste and high calorific fractions. The mostly asked question is, if it is a reasonable decision to build the unsorted municipal waste sorting system. Unfortunately the answer is not simple. In consideration of the current law provisions, it is necessary to introduce the selective collection system of the packaging and to achieve the output rate, defined in National Waste Management Plan as well as to assure the reduction of the volume of the bio-degradable waste. It seems to be impossible to achieve this goal in the prospect of few years. Relating to that, the sorting systems should assure, not only the sorting and selecting of raw materials from the selective collected waste, but also the recovery of the raw materials from the unsorted municipal waste, classification – the separation of fractions that contain the bio-degradable waste, and the separation of high caloric fractions depending on specific project conditions.
