Chlorine attacks the polyamide RO membrane to cause membrane failure as measured by enhanced passage of both salt and water. For this reason, activated carbon pre-filters that remove chlorine are typically placed ahead of RO membranes in home drinking water treatment RO system. A general home drinking water treatment system employing RO is composed of preliminary sediment filter, activated carbon pre-filter, a reverse osmosis membrane, and an activated carbon post-filter. In this respect, a chlorine resistant RO membrane (CRM) is highly desirable not only for simplifying home drinking water treatment RO system by removing activated carbonpre-filter, but also constant exposure to chlorine in the permeated water tank to inhibit microbial activities.
