The Argument for Water-Resource Management

Courtesy of Journal AWWA
Dec. 1, 1971
Water-resource management is vital in providing enough water for residential, recreational and industrial purposes. Such management has practically eliminated potentially damaging floods, but water resources are diminishing and other sources must be cultivated to insure enough water for the future. Water from the sea is a potential source for potable water. Several desalting facilities are in use now, and reuse and reclamation of sewage water are becoming more acceptable. With the increase in population, the needs for electricity have also increased. Environmental concerns also need to be considered and many do not want nuclear or electric plants built because of the tremendous amounts of water needed to operate them. Another area of concern is the improvement of water quality. Water resource managers must balance all these needs and solve them for the future.
