Workshop
Biosafety in Laboratories
Date: 2nd & 3rd November 2009
Introduction
Laboratories in healthcare and research facilities are handling biological agents. Regularly new diseases like SARS or avian influenza are identified or new out-breaks of well known infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis or cholera are still a worldwide threat. Depending on the risk level of these substances, adapted safety measures have to be taken. International regulations are defining the dif-ferent pathogens into 4 risk levels. Due to this risk level laboratories are classified in 4 biosafety level. The laboratory has to be equipped with safety measures and the staff has to be trained on safe handling and using safety protective equip-ment.
Systematic of training
The overall goal of this training course is to train laboratory staff in Good Labora-tory Practice which is defined in the OECD Principles as: “...a quality system concerned with the organizational process and the conditions under which non-clinical health and environmental safety studies are planned, performed, moni-tored, recorded, archived and reported.”.
Objectives of the training course
- Rising awareness among hospital staff involved in laboratory processes.
- Increasing knowledge in how to assess risks caused by biological agents and to introduce safety equipment, techniques and measures how to minimize the risk.
- Explaining the meaning and importance of Good Laboratory Practice.
- Technical training on design of laboratories, inspecting and controlling of safety equipment and safe disposal of bio-hazardous waste.
- Encourage the use of a “Biosafety Manual” and Safety Operation Proce-dures (SOP).
Target Audience
The training is aimed at staff directly involved in biosafety practices. The training is intended for laboratory directors (laboratory managers) and laboratory workers, all of whom play key roles in the field of biosciences and in public health in gen-eral. The course is especially targeting personnel working in laboratories of healthcare or research facilities and is a mix of informative theoretical lessons and interac-tive workshops (lectures/presentations). The lessons are based on simulations, questions, exercises, and practical demonstrations undertaken by qualified train-ers to make learning enjoyable and to encourage a high level of knowledge re-tention.
Topics covered
The tutorial covers a wide range of topics, including:
- General information about the topics of Laboratory Biosafety.
- Relevant national and international guidelines.
- Risks and Hazards of biological agents.
- Classification of Biosafety Level 1 to 4.
- Assessment of prevalent situation in the laboratories.
- Preventive and mitigation measures for different biosafety level.
- Introduction of proper laboratory design, protective equipment for han-dling personal and safe disposal of biohazardous waste.
- Occupational safety aspects and first aid measures.
- Introduction of relevant documentation and reporting of exposures.
