The first data service that allows companies to benchmark their carbon footprint in preparation for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) will be launched at Sustainabilitylive! in Birmingham, which takes place from 19th to 21st May 2009.

CO2Benchmark is unique in that it provides the following services through its website, www.CO2Benchmark.com:

  • Anyone can compare the latest emissions data of 2500 organisations in 20 countries
  • Anyone can consult carbon credits that have been   allocated and verified under the European Trading Scheme since 2005
  • Anyone can benchmark emissions by taking into account important factors, such as origin of electricity supply and organisation size

This type of information is typically hard to find and scattered across reports. For the first time, it has been aggregated into one database and made available for analysis via an easy-to-use interface. Anyone can now gain fact-based insights into how companies are managing their carbon footprint, for example:

... how specific factories, hospitals etc. are reducing their carbon footprint over time

... which company is best-in-class by sector

... how carbon efficient different sectors are relative to each other

CO2Benchmark’s service will be particularly useful for CSR executives, sustainability consultants, and carbon accountants.

The CRC will require many companies to measure their carbon emissions for the very first time. It carry both a financial and a reputational cost, depending on a participant’s position in the CRC league tables. CO2Benchmark.com helps companies assess their starting position in their sector league table and allows them to use factual information to support assumptions made in business cases. This will give companies a head start prior to the CRC’s becoming mandatory in April 2010.

CO2Benchmark.com is committed to providing greater transparency of organisations’ CO2 emissions, and therefore offers free access to specific areas of its knowledge base. Choosing from 70 sectors, users can benchmark up to three organisations or consult ETS credits. Users wishing to access all data can subscribe for premium access.

CO2Benchmark.com has been in beta since early 2009 and will officially launch at Sustainabilitylive!, a business event that confronts some of the leading issues facing 21st century businesses, such as the energy crisis, environmental processes and water supply.

CO2Benchmark.com’s Managing Director Reginald Warlop, said: “Officially launching our benchmarking service this month is a great opportunity to be a part of the event’s mission to tackle the resource and sustainability issues facing UK companies today. We are proud to be the first provider to offer comprehensive, near real-time CO2 benchmarking to companies who want to reduce their carbon footprint.”
