The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has published new statistics revealing the significant impact carbon reduction schemes within the chemicals industry could have on wider carbon reduction targets.

According to data collated by management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, the general public are currently saving two units of greenhouse gases through the use of energy-efficient chemical products for every unit emitted by the chemical industry itself.

The ratio is forecast to increase to 4:1 by 2030 should emission reduction initiatives in the industry continue to gain ground.

ACC president and chief executive officer Cal Dooley said: 'Many of today's and tomorrow's energy-saving products and green jobs depend on chemistry. This new research confirms that the business of chemistry provides climate solutions.'

Last month, Dow announced that it was to collaborate with energy company Gazprom Marketing and Trading on a scheme which aims to use Dow technologies in a series of carbon-reducing applications.
