Earlier this month the online journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reported that new research indicated that dangerous bacteria may be more commonly found in showerheads than was previously thought. Genetic tests were conducted from 45 showerheads in apartments, single homes and public places in nine U.S. cities from five states.
Approximately 20% of the swabs taken from the showerheads had Mycobacterium avium. The bacteria can cause severe pulmonary disease, especially with the immune-compromised. The bacteria, along with other pathogens, were found in biofilms on the showerheads. One interesting finding was that plastic showerheads appear to harbor more microorganisms than metal showerheads.
Showerheads with biofilm containing microorganisms become a concern when they are used and the bacteria are aerosolized and remain airborne for some time. People taking a shower then have the opportunity to inhale the microorganisms and become ill.
The primary danger is for those with immune-compromised systems. The report suggests changing showerheads regularly as cleaning can be difficult and Mycobacterium is somewhat resistant to chlorine. Other waterborne bacteria, such as Legionella, can also be inhaled in showers when contaminated water is aerosolized. Legionella has long been associated with faulty hot water systems.
EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest environmental laboratories, has three CDC Legionella proficiency tested laboratories. The company is also developing a PCR test method for Mycobacterium avium that will be available soon. “Whenever there are people with compromised immune systems it is important that they understand the risks in their environment,” stated Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President Marketing at EMSL Analytical. “Our laboratory has the expertise and resources to answer their concerns,” Frasca continued.
