Tesco purchasing manager Huw Clifford said: “We believe major retailers will be key in helping Britain reach its annual battery recycling target. Tesco will be rolling out battery collection points across all stores in advance of the national campaign that starts next February. Only when collection points are in place will consumers begin to recycle their spent batteries.

“We already have a national contract with WasteCare (parent company of BatteryBack) and combining battery collections at the same time makes both environmental and business sense.
Tesco will also have a representative on the board of BatteryBack for the next twelve months.”

BatteryBack already have over 4,500 free collection points across Britain. The firm has just announced a recent partnership with waste service provider PHS which will expand the potential collection network to more than 200,000 sites throughout Britain.

The news comes as Energizer, one of the “UK’s largest battery producers”, has joined Valpak’s battery producer compliance scheme.

Valpak chief executive Steve Gough said: “Valpak recognise the economies of scale that having a member such as Energizer will bring. Many businesses will be well down the road to understanding what their responsibilities are and are now making their choice of scheme and signing ahead of the 15 October deadline.”

Under the Batteries Regulations, all battery producers who put more than one tonne of batteries per year onto the market will have to register with an approved compliance scheme.

Energizer customer services director Alan Taylor said: “Energizer has worked with Valpak on both packaging and waste electrical and electronic equipment compliance for many years and they have always provided competitive and reliable compliance so we are confident that the batteries scheme will be no different.”
