Thermal Desorption

Thermal Desorption is a proven, cost effective and accurate method for the treatment of petroleum contaminated soils. While most commonly used in the remediation of soils impacted with gasoline, diesel, fuels and other volatile organic compounds, our team or professionals have also successfully treated coal tars and heavy oils in our over 600,000 tons of experience.

Thermal Desorption is not a 'Dirt In ... Dirt Out' procedure. Our team of highly trained and experienced operators knows and follows the intricate balance of technology that is required to eliminate the contaminant and give you the results you need. In most cases, to undetectable levels in Parts per Billion.

By treating your soils on location, removing and destroying the contaminant and replacing the soils on site, you will eliminate the 'Cradle to Grave' risks and costs associated with off site treatment and or disposal.

You can maintain your peace of mind with the knowledge that when the project is completed, your risks are over.

Prior to treating soils in our thermal process, we visit each location for logistical purposes, and collect our own samples to conduct a bench scale or computerized model.

A split of the samples collected are sent to a third party laboratory for analysis and then reviewed by a forensic chemist. In the analytical process we check for the presence of substances that are incompatible with the Thermal Process and local permitting, or that may undergo undesirable chemical changes during the heat process, such as herbicides, pesticides and pcb's. This is to ensure safe and accurate treatment of your soils.

Once we are certain of the site parameters and contaminated soil content, we are ready to go to work.

The soils enter the system at the cold feed bin (1). The cold feed bin meters and weighs the soils through an electronically calibrated weighing system. Our treatment is based on a 'per ton' rate since weight is a constant while volume is a variable.

The soils enter the direct fired, counter flow rotary kiln (2) where they will remain for 6 to 8 minutes. The soils will reach temperatures of 600 to 900+ degrees F. depending on treatment requirements. The treated soils exit the system through the quench screw (3) where they are re-hydrated and cooled with water for dust control and a safer handling temperature.

During the time the volatile organics are exposed to the heat source in the rotary kiln, they become airborne and are transferred along with any airborne particulates, into the baghouse (4). Our baghouse consists of nearly 300 filter bags capable of removing particles as small as 10 microns with airflows at 10,000 cubic feet per minute. The baghouse is self- cleaning with a series of timed pulsing air jets that return the particulate to the final section of the treatment system.

The vaporized contaminant is then introduced into the afterburner (5). The afterburner operates at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 2000 degrees F. depending on treatment requirements. At these temperatures, the standard volatilized petroleum is destroyed at a 99.9% efficiency.

We utilize only clean burning fuel in our treatment process, propane and natural gas.
This helps to eliminate the risk of cross contamination that may occur with blended fuels.

With fuel costs being a driving cost in the treatment process, we pre-process the soils for accurate soil sizing and debris removal.

Soil sizing of 2 inches and below allows for a more complete heat treatment at a much lower fuel consumption combined with a greater treatment rate in tons per hour.

We are committed to providing the most accurate and cost effective methods for your remediation needs.

Our state of the art Control Room (6) monitors and controls all aspects of the Thermal Desorption Process. Our computerized monitoring system provides complete printed documentation every 5 minutes of the critical aspects of the process such as treatment rates, soil exit temperatures, afterburner temperatures and many other aspects of the process.

These are provided as a portion of the permanent record of your remediation project.
